Flexible Multiservice Ethernet for 3G Mobile Backh
Growing Profitable 3G Services While Reducing OPEX
The growth of third-generation (3G) wireless services and network bandwidth places significant strain on mobile operators' capital and operational budgets.
Achieving profit margins and long-term scalability requires a cost-effective Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture that carries all services efficiently.
High-speed mobile data, video, multimedia messaging, and enhanced location-based services enable important new revenue sources but demand robust network performance, putting profitability gains at risk if the network is not optimally designed to meet the new bandwidth requirements and maintain the high level of reliability required for critical voice revenue.

Nokia Siemens Doubles EDGE Data Speed
Nokia Siemens Networks Thursday launched their downlink Dual Carrier EDGE software solution, ushering the first steps of EDGE Evolution into Nokia Siemens Networks' GSM/EDGE radio portfolio.
This solution offers double data speeds of up to 592 kbps to existing EDGE-capable GSM networks, thus enabling a mobile broadband experience, such as maintaining relationships in virtual societies, posting video clips to blogs in real time or streaming the latest news in mobile TV.
Nokia Siemens Networks' Dual Carrier EDGE solution, which will be available as a software upgrade from Q3 2008 onwards is the first step in evolving EDGE. As a strong innovator of EDGE Evolution, Nokia Siemens Networks already has additional plans to introduce in its networks the next substantial step, the so called EGPRS 2, to further boost end user experience in up- and downlink performance. This will result in downlink speeds of up to 1.2 Mbps and will double uplink speed to up to 473 kbps, thus quadrupling the capabilities of EDGE Thursday. EDGE Evolution is based on the 3GPP release 7 standard.
"By 2015, we expect to live in a broadband-IP world with five billion people 'always on' and therefore Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to protecting customer investments and continue to implement leading EDGE technology. Dual Carrier software upgrade is an easy and extremely cost efficient step to bring broadband user experience to GSM/EDGE networks," says Ari Lehtoranta, Head of Radio Access Business Unit, Nokia Siemens Networks.
Operators can serve their customers even better using the Dual Carrier solution as the demand for data services and connectivity is immense, proven by the steep increase on data services consumption in 3G/HSPA networks Thursday. With this solution, 3G/HSPA operators can offer service continuity for their 3G services.

Communications "Gizmo" Is a Lifesaver
A "gizmo" could help save your life someday, or perhaps the life of a friend or loved one. Developed by University of California/San Diego electrical engineering student Javier Rodriguez Molina, Gizmo is a mobile wireless communications platform that's designed to give emergency responders fast, on-the-spot data from a hostage situation, terrorist attack, building collapse or just about any other location that's too dangerous for humans to personally investigate.
The Gizmo prototype, which resembles a cross between a remote-controlled toy truck and a lunar landing vehicle, is capable of transmitting, in real time, any information that emergency personnel need via any communications system they're using. One Gizmo can create a wireless network 200 meters in diameter; several working in unison can create an exponentially larger network.
The data collected by Gizmo can be transmitted via a wireless network connection to virtually any location, whether it's a police command station a block away or a research laboratory on the other side of the world. Gizmo can be controlled by either a mobile phone or computer. The platform can be equipped with a high definition camera, super-sensitive microphones, gas, heat or radiation sensors or a remote controlled arm that can collect samples.
Gizmo's information can be sent to any communications device, including a mobile phone, wireless-enabled laptop, a Bluetooth phone or whatever type of wireless infrastructure emergency personnel happen to be using. If one communications system fails, emergency personnel--and Gizmo--can switch to another. Like any wireless Internet system, Gizmo has the ability to send information through walls or other obstructions.
Rodriguez's goal is to produce Gizmos at a relatively cheap price, less than $1,000 apiece, allowing police, fire and other emergency agencies to buy several specialized versions. The basic system is mostly constructed with easy-to-replace, mass-produced parts.
The current Gizmo is the size of a remote-controlled toy truck. A future version could be built on an even smaller scale, allowing the unit to enter a hostage or other crime scene undetected. The platform could also be scaled as large as a full sized truck, capable of muscling its way into a disaster situation under even in the harshest conditions, such as a hurricane. Rodriguez and his colleagues are currently developing a toy-sized Gizmo version with tank treads, enabling it to climb stairs and over curbs and rocks.
"Using technology to try to save lives is the most important thing for me now," Rodriguez says. "I'm taking part in work that can make people more secure by helping police, helping firefighters, helping anybody who is responding to a dangerous situation."

Apple iPhone Launching in Britain and Germany
Apple Inc.'s much-anticipated iPhone device will go on sale outside the U.S. for the first time, launching in Britain and Germany.
The 8GB music phone features builtin WiFi and mobile data technology, as well as a host of multimedia features and other mobile software. It will be sold by T-Mobile in Germany for Euro 399 (US$584), and by O2 and Carphone Warehouse in the UK, at a cost of 269 Poundsterling (US$564).
Analysts aren't expecting the iPhone's European launch to create quite as much fervor as the American release in late June, which attracted close to 500,000 buyers in a single weekend. There is sure to be a sizable rush, however, and retailers in Germany and Britain have undoubtedly prepared for anything.
